Facebook confirmed that it introduced sponsored stories to its news ticker section. Sponsored stories are extensions of News Feed and the social network thinks that it is only natural that they also appear in the Ticker.
The Ticker section first appeared in the Facebook home page last September. It got mixed reviews from the users. It became the repository for repetitive message so that the main feed would contain the more important staff. During the launch, different types of updates appeared in the Ticker. Spotify allowed its users to automatically share what they’re listening to in the new feature.
The Ticker feature received was not well received by some Facebook users. They criticized it and said that if the ticker updates were not good enough for the main feed then why put them in a special place at all.
Now it appears that Facebook designed the Ticker as a place to serve its advertising platform. But it seems like its plan would backfire because users are not paying much attention to the contents of the section. There’s no way to opt-out of the feature but users can click on the X in the post to remove the ad, just like any other ticker item.
