Apple had to redesign the antenna of its iPhone 4 so that users can optimize the use of Verizon’s CDMA network. The Verizon iPhone 4 has four band slits in the right and left sides. This is different from the AT&T iPhone 4, which has one slit on top and three slits on either side.
The AT&T iPhone 4 had reception problems and users are asked to hold the phone in a certain way to avoid having the problem. In July iPhone 4 users are offered a free case that would help solve reception problems.
The redesign of the iPhone 4 antenna is necessary because of the different network types that Verizon and AT&T use. The Verizon iPhone 4 can be used as a hotspot and lets up to five Wi-Fi devices to connect. This feature is not available in the AT&T version.
The downside is that the Verizon iPhone will not allow you to use data and voice at the same time. Verizon needs to upgrade its network to change this. That means the user can’t surf the internet while talking on the phone. This is something that AT&T subscribes can do on their iPhone 4. No official word yet on an network upgrade from Verizon.
