YouTube May be Threatened by UK Digital Economy Bill

Clause 17 under the Digital Economy Bill has now been changed, which could very well affect YouTube and other websites that use sizeable amounts of content that is infringing on copyright laws.  YouTube already has a past in this sense because it was criticized by media companies and the like about using unauthorized clips from TV shows of artists’ videos.  YouTube, as well as other similar websites, could be shut down permanently.

Many people find this unnerving while some see it as the new generation speaking to stop copyright infringement.  One of the Liberal Democrats who had tabled this specific amendment said that he had ways in mind to target those that are taking part in illegal file sharing by suspending their internet connection.

Many small, local businesses are worried about the affect the Digital Economy Bill will have them – such as a small cafes, airports, and even pubs.  The reason for this is that this same bill may also be cutting back on Wi-Fi access because this is an area of concern when it comes to copyright infringement and unlawful file sharing.  These businesses will be allowed prosecution should the government find that their Wi-Fi connection had been used in the illegal use of downloading or sharing copyrighted material.

Can YouTube stay alive?  Only time will tell…
