YouTube expands its features by unveiling a new live streaming service called YouTube Live. That service incorporates live-streaming capabilities into the web site. As part of the launch, YouTube added a new page where users can browse through various live events.
Viewers can watch a live Indian Premier League Cricket game and a lecture on the impact of the tobacco industry on global health at Stanford University. At present not everyone can live stream on YouTube. The company has a select list of partners but it hopes to add more into the list in the future. There’s a Coachella Live Webcast happening on Friday.
The Live Streaming on YouTube is on beta and partners in good standing can start streaming their contents on the site. It is the company’s goal to allow its partners to live stream from their channels.
There were reports last week that YouTube will be overhauling the site. The video-sharing web site will try to make itself handle internet-connected TV sets better. It is reorganizing the pages to group them into channels such as sports and arts.
YouTube will include 20 premium channels that would have five to ten hours of original programming per week. It will implement the changes over the next months. The changes would not happen drastically overnight.
