Microsoft is a well known brand, but why do they always seem to be adding products right after another, *cough* Apple *cough*, company has already released something new? As reported in PC World, the Microsoft Courier doesn’t really seem to be anything that is actually in the making, BUT Engadget reports on some key points that sure as heck seem like a real product.
Of course, Apple just came out with the iPad tablet computer, so why wouldn’t Microsoft want to get into the tablet game? Microsoft is known for
software, a company that makes software like Windows and browsers like Internet Explorer. But why does it always seem that since they are the front runner in those fields, they have no idea what the computer user really wants? Who cares about smooth browser edges and window transitions that do this or that? Most computer users are happy to get on the internet in less than 5 minutes, let alone be able to pack Internet Explorer with all sorts of add-ons that bog down a normal CPU.
What I am trying to say is that NOW Microsoft might be making a tablet type gadget and it might be better than the iPad, BUT they have already had a look at the iPad. That gives Microsoft an advantage once people start to complain about things they hate with the iPad, besides price of course. There are barely any companies that can punch out software like Microsoft, so they are copying nobody, and their software usually has issues. Why do you think that you have updates for your computer so often and most of the are security related?
You can see some of the “promos” for this Microsoft Courier and other information at PCworld.com or YouTube.

Gotta love the neutral journalism! Keep up the good work!
You gotta love biased and incorrect journalism. First off, Courier actually made its debut in September of 2009 with 2 prototype demonstration videos, so that just puts half of your paragraph 3 to shame. Plus, Im guessing you haven’t used Windows 7 or haven’t even tried it to understand that the general public seems to have adopted windows 7 quite well, and has been getting a lot of praise and acceptance, over what was the faulty windows vista (Best OS since XP).
And I love this part, “But why does it always seem that since they are the front runner in those fields, they have no idea what the computer user really wants?” Really?….Well considering the holy of god that is the iPad doesnt have flash support, multi-tasking capabilities or a webcam (everything the “courier” does have) then what does that make Apple?
this is true journalism at its finest!
Are you serious in posing the question why there are so many security updates? Well let’s see. Maybe it’s because they have a huge market share in computer OSes. Vulnerabilities can be found for all operating systems. Why would it be worth a hacker’s time to expose one that only effects such a minute percent of computers.
At least courier is inovative. Not some supersized form factor of a previous idea.
There is one problem with your theory…. Microsoft has been developing this B4 the ipad came to being. and the world has seen the courier 6 months b4 we saw the ipad.
And they invented the tablet market.. didnt they?
So what if they are 6, 8 months late… isnt it the best device that matters… so its best to ask, why microsoft dont get the credit even when they have better products. or why do they take so long to put products to market.
seriously? There have been reports and videos of the Courier from last September, well before the iPad was even known about. http://gizmodo.com/5365299/courier-first-details-of-microsofts-secret-tablet. And this thing looks like it can do a lot more than a giant ipod touch. I mean, you can get away with no multitasking on a phone, but on a netbook replacement? And this article is complaining that MS doesn’t know what users want? you are right, Mr. Jobs, very neutral journalism here.
Just ignoring the CODEX has been in development since at least 2007. Tablets have been pushed by MS since the last then years, you forget that the iPad was released after the first video’s of the courier in september 2009.
Not an Apple or MS fanboy, but get your facts straight…
Depends on what step you’re talking about – Microsoft has its thumbs in many areas and products that Apple does not have and Apple is a hardware company that does software and Microsoft is a software company that does not necessarily do hardware. The ITouch came after MP3 players, the MAC stole from Xerox, Microsoft stole from Apple, and so the party goes. Being the first may not always end up being the best. Apple has done well since Jobs has returned but Apple still only has a small percentage of the computer market – now it’s challenged by others in the phone arena. It still owns the MP3 market and music store, though others are coming up with other ideas. Microsoft is in the position to be everywhere in our lives – computers, cell phone, server, games, vehicle, home entertainment, tablet device, music, etc. Apple is snazzy but limited to some degree. Sizzle has value but we’ll see about staying power.
Microsoft have already years of experience in the tablet market, and in advanced touch screen technology with product ‘Surface’ The first videos of Courier were released more than 5 months ahead of any official product information from Apple on the iPAD. From my understanding courier concept has been around a long time, but it is just now the hardware is becoming affordable.
And your comment “microsoft software always has issues” Well so does all software, but if you’ve used any of the recent Microsoft products such as Windows 7 you will find they are of the highest quality, and so few issues that they are a dream to use.
one negative of ipad is Appstore. (to me it is a negative)
if the courier can read photos from usb connection (memory card reader, camera, thumb drives, etc…), if it supports homebrew application, then im sold.
I wonder if Microsoft has figured out Handwriting recognizing algorithms, which can work for cursive writings as shown in the Video (Still in research even in the finest Universities of the world, Handwritings are different as finger prints for different people). Besides, I dont want to write such long sentences and so does millions around me, hope the virtual keyboard exists if these wants to do the rounds among the people.
And its not always the best products that sell, but the products which simply gets the stuff we use to our hands with ease. That is the reason why a company jumped from $5b in 1988 to $200b in 2010.
I still think that the HP Slate is more impressive than the iPad or the Courier. Its got windows 7 and usb ports.
