Verizon Testing 1Gbps Fiber Optic Broadband

Verizon said today that it tested a Fios connection with a company back in June and they were able to deliver a download speed of 925Mbps.  They connected a company to a local server, as well as, a server that was about 400 miles away.  Verizon has spent many billions of dollars that last couple years upgrading broadband networks the run directly to homes and businesses.

Fiber optic connections will provide the capacity to deliver unlimited broadband to customers via equipment that can split the wavelengths on the glass fiber optics.  Right now, actual speeds will vary due to electronics that cannot handle the load.  The gigabit passive optical network hardware would be able to deliver downloads of about 2.4Gbps.

With more and more devices demanding higher speeds and better downloads, Verizon’s Fios networks should be able to provide that.  Services like 3DTV, ultra HDTV, multiplayer gaming and HD video conferencing all need higher download rates and these services are the way of the future for business and residential customers.

For right now, the fastest speed that you can get via Verizon is about 50Mbps, so don’t think you are going to be able to upgrade to the fastest speed on the block, yet.  The 100Mbps service will be offered to customer very soon, but let’s not forget the price.  The 50Mbps is about $140 with a phone bundle, you can imagine what the 1Gbps is priced at.
