I was wondering how long it would take to see a 3G service, 4G service, 10G service and so on. It appears that in the last 3 years, mobile technology has gotten a boost today Verizon announced that their 4G handsets will be out by mid-2011. 2 things come to mind when I read about this news and they are; when is the 5, or even 6G, coming out and will competitors be able to get their 4G handsets out before that?
This news, of course, follows that launch of Verizon’s commercial 4G network coming only 3 to 6 months before the handsets.
The 4G network will be available in about 30 markets and be running on a spectrum purchased in the 700Mhz auction. Although the network is in phase 4, Verizon cannot say for sure what handsets, or manufacturers will be making handsets for the network.
Basically, chip manufacturers will have to create an integrated chip that will work with both the 3G and 4G technologies. The technology, or LTE (long term evolution), will be mostly for the data traffic and regular voice traffic will still use the CDMA cellular networks currently available. With that being said, you can expect that the USB Air cards will be available first and most handsets and other equipment will follow in the next year or so.
