Valve, one of the world’s largest distributors of online games and the creators of the sensational hits of the Half-Life, Left 4 Dead series and the multiplayer sensation Counter Strike, is looking at expanding its online game distribution operations to the Mac community. Currently, Valve sells and distributes hundreds of game titles around the world through its proprietary service known as Steam where users can purchase both new and old games and download them onto any computer they’re logged into. Unfortunately, in the past, this has been limited entirely to PC users; however, a new program entitled “Steamworks for Mac” is looking at bridging that gap by establishing Steam Play – a service where users can play PC games with both Mac and PC users.
This is exciting news for the Mac community as in the past Mac users that have been interested in gaming have mostly been forced to rely upon consoles for their entertainment due to the lack of game variety available outside of the PC realm. With this new development underway, Valve will most likely spur a major market boost for the Mac gaming world as well and may help revitalize what has been seen as a dying market for the past few years.
Currently, the Steamworks for Mac program is still in beta testing and is running primarily on PC platforms in order to test viability with running Mac games on PCs (and, in the end, vice versa). While there is still no official release date for the program at this time, users can most likely expect to see it sometime later this year with the release of the sequel to yet another of Valve’s signature titles “Portal” debuting on both PC and Mac via the online Steam community followed by the rest of the library after.
