UberSocial Direct Message Not Private

Twitter sent out a warning to users of UberSocial that the direct messages they send out might not be private. Twitter stated that longer direct messages that were sent through UberSocial and Twidroyd apps could be read by other people and not just the intended receiver of the DM.

The privacy issue is seen with direct messages that are longer than 140 characters sent through the username command. Users on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry are affected by this issue. Twitter is said to be working with UberSocial to make the apps comply with Twitter’s privacy policies. Twitter issued the warning so that the users are aware.

UberSocial has millions of users and has 2.8 million followers on Twitter. It used to be known as UberTwitter until it got into trouble with Twitter last month and changed its name to UberSocial. Twitter suspended UberSocial’s use of the Twitter API last month because of a similar problem. UberTWitter and Twidroyd apps used a tweet-elongation service that let people compose messages that are longer than 140 characters. The service also allowed posting of private messages on a public website.

Twitter also didn’t like the UberTwitter name, which made the company rename itself to UberSocial. At the same time they also removed the message-elongation feature.
