Sony Android Tablet is Official

It’s official. Sony is going to be putting out their own tablet computer that will be using Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, which is the latest release Android has so far. The new product is expected to be out for customers to buy by the end of 2011.

The unnamed table computer is expected to have a 9.4-inch screen and be capable of playing games from the original PlayStation and any games made for touch screen devices. No other information or specifics is known about this upcoming device.

The fact that Sony is making an Android based tablet shows their continued support for that operating system. Recently, Sony’s mobile partner, Sony Ericsson, stopped using Symbian OS for Nokia devices and changed over to the Android OS. Their Xperia Play mobile phone is expected out for U.S. customers later this month and also will work with some PlayStation games.

Sony is also expected to put out software for PlayStation for all the Android 2.3 and up phones later in 2011 via an application called PlayStation Suite.

The fact that Sony is increasing its use of the Android operating system could turn out to be one of the largest bids in competing against Apple’s current lead in the mobile market.
