It was revealed that it will take more time for a person to read a book when using the Kindle or iPad in comparison with the printed page. The survey was conducted by the Nielsen Norman Group headed by Dr. Jakob Nielsen. The goal of the survey is to identify the reading times of 24 users on the iPad, Kindle 2, PC monitor as well as old fashion paper. As a matter of fact, it was discovered that reading experience on an electronic tablet was slower up to 10.7 than reading a standard printed book.

Moreover, it was revealed that users preferred reading books on an electronic device despite their slow reading. But as for the PC monitor, it was hated by all users as a reading platform.

Also during the study the participants were asked to characterize each format on a scale of 1 to 7. The Kindle2, iPad as well as printed book got the following figures: 5.7, 5.8 as well as 5.6 respectively. As for the PC monitor, it managed to gather only 3.6 points. Apart from that it was revealed by the survey that reading experience on the PC resembled the atmosphere like being at work. But it was more relaxing for participants to read a printed book than an electronic version of a tablet device.

Although people read slower on an electronic device, still the e-reader device is becoming more popular among people. In 2009 e-books raked in $313 million. They grew by 176.6 percent in comparison with 2008 and overtook audio book sales. As for this year, sales of e-book are growing at the moment at a rate of 217.3 percent.
