Promoting Your Twitter Account For A Fee

Everyone is on Twitter and everyone that is on Twitter wants followers.  There are companies that will pay you large sums of money if you advertise their business to your followers.  So why wouldn’t you want all the followers you can get?  The more the merrier.

Now, Twitter is looking into a promotional feature that will feature your Twitter account to the masses, on Twitter, for a fee.  There hasn’t been much talk about whether the fee will be follower based or if you are able to spend a flat fee for specific amount of impressions.  Both ways are common in this type of industry so it doesn’t look like Twitter is trying to re-invent the wheel here.

Because there has never really been a value set to a Twitter “follower”, and why would there be, some are asking how companies can justify the spending to gain more followers.  You have people on the site every single day and you have some that don’t login for a whole month at a time, so what value would you be able to put on something that fluctuates that much?

Twitter won’t confirm that they are even thinking about something like this, but other sources have said that the experiment is in the discussion phase.  I am sure that the investors of Twitter are on the fritz about making money sometime soon, so talking about systems like this wouldn’t be a surprise to most reading this.
