New Motorola Xoom Sales Are Slower Than Expected

The new Motorola Xoom, an Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet was recently released, but according to reports, it isn’t selling very well so far. Motorola is also not doing very well with its Atrix 4G smart phone and the new laptop docking system for it.

All three products are being called poor performers by analysts even though Verizon and AT&T both put out major advertising campaigns for all of them. The analysts have deemed the sales of the Xoom and Atrix as being very disappointing.

They blame the slow sales in part on the competition from the $49 iPhone 3GS and the HTC Inspire phone.  The Atrix is a dual-core Android smart phone with a laptop dock accessory. When it is put into the dock, it turns into a type of netbook which has full capability to browse the Internet, play movies, and use Android applications.

The price of the Atrix is $199, which doesn’t fare well against the more than half as expensive iPhone 3GS. The laptop dock costs an extra $500, which also makes it an expensive choice for a netbook device.

Experts have said that Motorola won’t survive if it doesn’t break away from the pack. While it has done this with the Atrix, the device is deemed far too expensive. It is also very slow by all reports, due to the fact that AT&T turned off the HSUPA 4G radio inside of it for unknown reasons, making the speed of their service only around 300 Kbps, which is pretty slow these days.

Sales reports for the Xoom show that it has sold a mere 100,000, which was determined by checking the Android developer website and counting the number of units that were sold that used Android 3.0. Neither AT&T nor Verizon have actually shared any sales data.
