Microsoft filed various patent lawsuits to make money over licensing deals. In a sense, the software giant from Redmond doesn’t see the Google OS as a threat but wants get its share of the profit. But the 37 Android-related lawsuits mean a lot of trouble for Android.
Google’s reckless approach towards other companies’ intellectual property rights led to barrage of lawsuits. Google let its partners take the burden of its incompetence. Google owns a small patent portfolio, which is not diversified enough to solve the Android cross licenses problems.
Patent suits are usually boring, especially if a small company is suing a bigger one but this time it’s different. The big guns of software industry are involved, which include Oracle, Apple, Motorola, Microsoft, and Google.
Microsoft claims that the Nook crows violated various patents. An earlier Oracle law suit against Google involves both copyrights and patents. Linux disputed that the Android infringed on some copyrights. This is a complicated mess that Google got itself into.
Android platform is a huge undertaking. Its SDK has 100,000 files. An automated software audit could take a day. Google is guilty of carelessness and the result is the mess the company is in right now.
