We have been graced with the beauty of Google Image Search since 2001, but have yet to see the service improved. The service has cataloged over 10 billion images and needs to improve so users can get more pinpoint results. Google images is very popular and many use the search to find anything from an old cartoon all the way to images from a news story from today.
Some are saying the new image search page will look similar to Bing. The text from the results page will be removed and the images will be placed closer together allowing for more images per page. There is also a new feature for Google called “infinite scroll”, more images will appear as the user scrolls down the results page.
Larger previews will popup when you hover over the images and information from each photo will also be shown when hovered over. All of these changes, and others including timeline-based searching for images, will be available to about 10 percent of the users today. The rest of Google users will see the changes by the end of the week.
At the same time the image search is being revamped there is another option for advertisers being used. The advertisers will now be able to put a thumbnail next to their ads. Similar to Facebook ads, only the image will be to one side or the other. Right now, Google has not said anything about using this ad format anywhere else.
