Google Buys Solid Gold Virtual Currency Site, Takes on Facebook Credits

Since Google is planning to take on Facebook, something I am not even sure Google can do at this point, they might as well have their own virtual currency, right?  Facebook Credits are used to buy games, purchase in game accessories, among other things, so Google is planning the similar setup and today announced the purchase of Jambool.

With a purchase price reported at $70 million, Google picks up the next piece of the puzzle they hope will take on Facebook in the Social Networking arena.  The deal was first reported by TechCrunch and was confirmed by Google and Jambool on the 13th of this month.  In a quick statment about the deal:

“We’re pleased and excited to welcome the Jambool team to Google. We are committed to offering consumers and merchants innovative digital payment solutions and Jambool will help Google evolve our payments offering and expand into digital goods and content”.

Notice they actually leave out the “social” part of this whole deal and when asked about it, the spokesperson said:

“E-commerce is a critical part of the Web experience for many users, and the very talented Jambool team will be a valuable asset to Google as we work to improve these experiences.”

Google is set to pack a punch with whatever social experience they are about to unleash on users.  Google hasn’t really said much about the social network, but with over $500 million in investments, you can assume they are on that track.
