FileSonic is the second online storage service that has disabled file sharing between users. The move was done after MegaUpload was shut down following the arrest of its founder last week due to copyright infringement charges.
FileSonic has corporate offices in the UK and Hong Kong. It posted on its web site that all the sharing functions on the site has been disabled. The service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that the user had uploaded personality.
Last Friday, MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom and several people were arrested by New Zealand enforcement officials. They were wanted by prosecutors in the United States for profiting from the distribution of copyrighted content without proper permission.
FileSonic provides free service that lets users to upload a maximum of 10 GB of data for up to 30 days. The service throttles the speed of which the file can be uploaded or downloaded. It has a subscription service that allows users to upload unlimited amount of files for up to 5 GB in size with no time or speed limit.
The company said that it has a zero tolerance policy for copyright infringement. It added that it responds right away to complaints made under the DMCA, which has set guidelines for copyright holders and service providers.
