There’s no doubt that the latest Motorola Droid X belongs to the high-class smartphones today. But didn’t they make a mistake to use Android 2.1 rather than getting Android 2.2 ? Which boasts faster surfing speed and more features for enterprise messaging. Droid X was launched on July 15 and now available for $199. This summer, it will get an upgrade to Android 2.2.

And just like the other Android 2.1 smartphones, Droid X has a powerful processor to handle all the applications and the OS of the model. It uses 1 GHz processor with an internal memory of 8 GB. It also comes with a 16 GB microSD but you can still expand the memory up to 40 GB.

Droid X will also help you during those eye-straining moments with a smartphone. With its 4.3-inch screen and 854 x 480 resolution, you will not have hard time reading and sending text messages. You would also get to capture HD videos and even play it on HD TV as well. You will also love Droid X’s 8-megapixel camera that has the 1/1,000-second shutter feature. Amateur photographers would even get to catch the most panoramic views by simply using the Droid X’s video and camera.

Count to three. That’s the number of microphones present in the Droid X. One is for the voice calls, the second mic is to pick up the voices when you shoot videos, and the third one is for the noise cancellation so you can clearly make quality video shoots and calls.

But the best thing about the Droid X is the longer battery life compared to EVO 4G. One owner tested the battery life of the smartphone by calling, using various applications, and did some other tasks that would drain its battery life. Believe it or not, he used it at 8 in the morning while in Connecticut and the phone was still thriving when he arrived to Massachusetts!

Droid X has great battery life? Uhm…Droid X may have greatER battery life than Evo, but its battery still sucks. Depending on the cities, Mass to Conn is about a two-hour trip–if your user is thrilled that he got all the way there without losing his battery, his Droid X isn’t doing any better than mine.

I own both DroidX and iPhone 3GS. I knew the Droid X had a shorter battery life than an iPhone when I bought it, so I got an extra battery. I’ve never gotten through a day without exhausting both batteries, even with all powersaving options maximized. I’m lucky if I can get two hours before I’ve exhausted the first battery, and I’m thinking I’ll need a third or even fourth to get through a full day.

What makes it worse is that the only place I can charge those batteries is in the Droid itself (at least until I find a charger that will charge the battery independently)…so every night I’m doing the Droid shuffle–put in the first dead battery, hook it up to the charger and wait for a full charge, swap that battery out and do it again, etc.) I thought iPhone was bad, but DroidX is the first mobile device I’ve owned that has me carrying chargers with me all day and planning my outlet-to-outlet strategy…just so I can use the phone for more than four hours.

Swapping batteries is great–it’s just plain stupid to have a phone that doesn’t support it…except that when the battery gets low in my iPhone I simply slap on an external battery pack (the Mophie) and keep going. Changing batteries in a Droid X means you must shut down and reboot the phone, wait for services to restart, about a 10-15 minute operation. If you’re in the middle of navigating with GPS, it’s quite frustrating.

So, no, Droid X does NOT have great battery life. It’s a good phone, but Moto needs to do some serious thinking about power delivery and battery management to make it useful for anything but brief periods away from an outlet.

First of all, pls let me say that I’m 78 and NOT A TECHY kinda guy. I’ll have my first Smart phone delivered to me this WED–8/4-…a Droid X. It will be running 2.2 Froyo. I intend to use it on a lengthy auto trip soon….Let’s say I want to use the Navigation feature for several hours in a days drive in unfamiliar territory……Why can’t I turn it on, get the navigation app going AND just plug it into the car charger (I got one from Verizon for it)…..won’t that solve the problem of the battery going down in, let’s say during 7 hours of usage time in the car.?? Thanks for your help. DTB P.S. also,,, while I’m using the navigation feature, can I receive and send calls?? and maybe check the weather for an area 6 hours down the road?

Hi Don, congrats on your new smartphone! the battery life is not that terrible so no worries… but if you have a charger, you can happy that puppy on for ever so no worries about battery life as long as u take your charger with you on the trip. And when you have the navigation on you sure can send and receive calls so no worries about missing calls. I’ve been using my google app navigation and love it! its still in beta but works better than before when I paid $10 per month for the service. good luck and have a safe trip!

…..Hey Johnny….. Thank you very much for the info…really looking forward to using the Droid X….I ordered the book “Droid for Dummies” from Amazon…..I’m sure it’ll help me, but won’t be out for about 6 weeks.
