CES 2012 Opens without Promise of the Next Big Thing

The Consumer Electronics Show will open with paper-thin TV sets, light-weight laptops, and thousands of devices filling up the convention space in Las Vegas. Even though there are tons of electronic gadgets on display, there’s no single device that would make a big impact in one’s life. CES-2012

The CES, which is said to be the world’s largest technology convention, usually showcase devices that would set the tone for the year in gadgetry. Industry’s largest companies usually participate in the event to showcase their latest innovations.

Devices that have managed to get the attention of the people who attended CES would go on to be best sellers, such as tablet PCs in 2011 and HD TVs the year before that. In 2012, it seems like the next big thing is not yet found.

According to analysts, no single device or innovation has emerged in this year’s event that would stand out among the rest, despite the record number of exhibitors and attendees. It was also announced that most of the tech industry’s top firms have scaled down their presence in the event. These include Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and Motorola Mobility. They wouldn’t participate in news conferences and wouldn’t have lavish booths like they used to have in past CES.
