Today the buzz is all about the new Intel Core i7 980X. The Extreme Edition cpu is the first of it’s kind with 6 seperate processing cores. The Extreme Edition cpu’s have been around for about 7 years, but most of the time the speed increase is not equivalant to the amount you will pay.
The CPU was named Gulftown, is the first of it’s kind and has the power to process up to 12 instructions from your operating system,
simotaneously. Packaged with a large tower like heat sink that has 6 pipes running through to help disperse some of the BTU’s this baby will be putting out. It also comes with a fan included that has two setting “Q” for quiet, I’m sure, and “P” for performance, which according to some reviews, is only needed if you are overclocking this all ready over-the-top processor.
With all of this speed you would immediately wonder about cache, but each of the 6 cores has it’s own 256K L2 cache, not to mention the shared cache rocking the boat at a huge 12MB. Hitting marks of 157 while multi-tasking and 206 when the processors are running during a video encoding test, this processor is close to twice as fast as the average.
What are you going to pay for this gem? According to TigerDirect.com you will be forking out just over 1,000 big ones for the brand new Intel Core i7 980X. That is a tad steep in my opinion, as well as, others that have reviewed it online, but if you want some speed in your system, you might not have any issue paying that price.
