A couple of rumors from a couple of different places are pointing towards Apple getting some tablet competition this year. RIM is rumored to be working on the “Blackpad” tablet computer which resembles an iPad-like touchscreen and we might see it in the fall.
The sources, which are two people close to RIM and familiar with company’s plans, say the device will run the Blackberry OS 6, which has yet to be released. It appears that with RIM getting into the tablet market, they are trying to compensate for lost market share in the mobile market. They appear to also trying to keep Apple at bay as they lead in the tablet market at this point.
Let’s not forget that Windows 7 and Android based tablets have yet to be announced, RIM might be starting this deal on the bottom looking way up. RIM hasn’t really shown they have the ability to put any product on the market that can shake things up, especially anything that might keep Apple from taking over the whole tablet market.
The “Blackpad” is expected sometime in November, right around the same time as the Blackberry Bold 9800. The Blackpad is a touchscreen only device and will be the first running the Blackberry OS 6.
