Anonymous planned to expose collaborators of Mexico’s Zetas drug cartel in a project called #OpCartel but it looked like the hacker group would not push through with its plan. There were members of the group that stated that the supposed kidnapping of an Anonymous hacker by the cartel didn’t happen.
Anonymous’ retreat came as a security company claimed that the drug cartel was hiring its own security experts to crackdown and track the hackers. This could result into the abduction, injury and death of people who would be traced.
Two members of Operation Cartel stated earlier this week that it would expose members of Zetas but now they retracted because they don’t want anyone to be killed as a result. They would stop identifying collaborators of the group.
Security company Stratfor warned last October 28 that the plan could have bloody results. Loss of life is inevitable once Anonymous released the identities of people connected to the cartels. It is unknown whether the information that Anonymous had with regards to the cartels is validated by the authorities. This could pose indiscriminate danger to individuals that are included in what Anonymous would decide to release.
Anonymous members are worried about the threat from the cartel. The group has no formal organizational structure and members communicate through online chat.
