In order to improve a weak position in the market, Advanced Micro Devices is attempting to create a momentum for laptop chips. Due to such an action the company will be able to make headway on its competitor, Intel.
According to Dirk Meyer, AMD’s CEO, the market of netbooks is a big opportunity for the company. In fact, it is doing great in the sphere of desktop chips having enough market share, but as for the laptop arena, it is not developed enough.
It was decided to make more power-efficient processors in order to enhance the battery life of laptops. Moreover, the company managed to improve graphics capabilities.
Also AMD made several changes in Bobcat chip microarchitecture which is designed for thin laptops in order it could match a new market of tablet computers. Bobcat products will be available next year.
In fact, AMD gained on Intel in the market of microprocessors in 2009, i.e. during the forth quarter of the year. AMD gained 1.6 percent of microprocessor shipments in comparison with the same quarter of the last year.
As a matter of fact, chips created by Intel provide better performance. As for AMD, it offers advantageous pricing and the company always provides discounts for customers in order they could purchase chips. Also the company increased chip shipments. Last year Lenovo became a partner of AMD. Furthermore, ThinkPad laptops based on AMD are offered to medium as well as small-sized businesses. They are regarded as a cheaper alternative to laptops based on Intel.
