We have seen many people walking, sitting and driving while texting, but a new study shows those that are driving while texting are adults. According to Pew Internet & American Life Project, 47% of adults, who text, have sent or read a text message while driving. In 2009, teens ages 16-17 were said to have done the same.
There is obviously a trend that could be quite dangerous to everyone. More and more people, adults and teens, are texting while driving. This type of inattentive driving could prove fatal for the driver and those around them. Pew interviewed 2252 adults in the last 2 months and 1917 have cellphones, while only 1189 of those send text messages.
Those numbers are not a surprise, but what might be a bit more of a surprise is the fact that 82% of Americans over 18 have a cell phone and 58% of them text. With that type of percentage it isn’t that hard to believe that some of those texting, are driving at the same time.
In that same group of Americans, 49% have been in a car when someone read or sent a text message, but that number jumps way up tp 75% when you are talking to 18 to 33 year olds. That is a lot of people and the trend is not going away. And don’t think that driving and texting is the only distraction, 17% of people interviewed have bumped into, or been bumped into by someone sending or reading a text.
