Acer’s revenue is decreasing and interest in its products in the United States and Western Europe markets are sagging as well. Analysts state that the company should focus on smartphones and tablets in order to have a bigger presence in the consumer electronics market.
According to reports, Apple has a 21.5 percent profit margin in its last fiscal year. Compare that to Acer’s 2.3 percent profit margin. Acer is primarily still a laptop company and Apple also dominates that market. Acer must find ways to make its products more attractive to the consumers.
Acer laptops have excellent features and are affordable. But it wouldn’t stand out among other laptops. Cover the Acer logo and you can’t distinguish it from other similarly priced HP or Dell laptops. Acer also focused on the netbook, which is a bad decision because consumers are now getting iPads and other tablet devices.
Acer is just as innovative as Apple but there is little hype to its innovations as compared to Apple. Recently Acer unveiled its Iconia Touchbook, which is a dual screen tablet/notebook. It features a virtual keyboard. It costs $1,200, which is much more expensive than the $500 tablet.
Acer does make smartphones, like the Iconia Smart. It is a high-end mobile phone unit with a 4.8 inch screen. It was last seen at the Mobile World Congress but no news yet on when it will be released and how much it would cost.
