Suburu annouced today that the brand new 2011 Outback will have an option for a Wi-Fi hotspot from Autonet Mobile. The add-on will be about $500, plus an activiation fee, of course. The hotspot will be 802.11 a/b/g and it runs on a 2.5G and 3g networks powered by Autonet Mobile.
The Autonet Mobile coverage is quite good throughout the United States and with the new 2011 Outback, you will have your own very sweet Wi-Fi hotspot. The service is not free of course and it’s not unlimited either. There are two plans to choose from, a 1GB plan for $29 a month or a 5GB plan for $59 a month. Not having overage charges is a nice touch, although Autonet Mobile will just crank your speed down as you cross of the barrier of your plan.
If you apply for a one year service contract the first 3 months are free with the purchase of this $23,000 Suburu Outback. The download speeds are listed at 400 to 800 kbps on the 3G network. Some experts are saying that paying any amount for mobile Wi-Fi of this type is not worth it at all. On the other hand, some have crunched numbers and figured that Autonet’s Mobile cost over 2 years was about 50% less than some smartphone plans.
