10 Technologies That Changed the Decade

Taken from a list of “25 Technologies that Changed the Decade” at eweek.com, I rounded up my favorite 10 to show you today.

  1. 3G Broadband – Well, I think that there would be very few people to disagree with this technology.  The 3G network isn’t perfect, but back in the day, if you didn’t have Wi-Fi or a ethernet cable, you wouldn’t be reading this.
  2. Bluetooth – Back in the day this might have been something that wasn’t going to take off, but with hands-free everything today, Bluetooth had certainly made it’s impact with many mobile devices.
  3. Firefox – Since Microsoft really didn’t care much about Internet Explorer, advances weren’t being made, so Firefox came along and allowed it’s users to tweak every single aspect of the open-source browser.  At least now, users have a choice with what browser they want to use.
  4. iPhone/iPod – Certainly something changed across the earth with the iPod came around.  The iPhone really changed things, but it was the iPod that really laid the groundwork with it’s sleek design and usability.
  5. Social Networks – Even though you are spending way too much time farming on Facebook and complaining on Twitter, the Social Networks have changed the way companies and customers interact on the web.
  6. Windows XP – Yeah I know it’s not brand new or the “latest thing”, but XP has brought a nice computing experience to everyone that owned a computer in the last 10 years.  It is still the most liked operating system that Microsoft has launched.
  7. Gmail/Google Apps – Leave it to Google to create something, that isn’t new, but load it with features and reliability and make it FREE.  Google Gmail has certainly changed the way you do free email and the way companies, conduct business on a daily basis.
  8. AJAX – Simple scripts and standards aside, AJAX has become the favorite while more companies are creating interactive websites that improve the users experience.
  9. 802.11g – Wireless technologies were the coolest thing to ever come from the internet age, but without the 802.11g, you weren’t even thinking about sending large files anywhere, plus this technology helped spread wireless to every corner of the earth.
  10. Netbooks – now this I don’t really think should be on the list, BUT, it was new technology that allowed users to get portable and bring the internet places, much easier.  Now that the iPad has arrived, I think the Netbook will disappear rather quickly, from the list.
