A recent study by the market research company International Data Corporation (IDC) picks the Android mobile operating system as the clear cut leader in the smart phone market through 2015.
IDC’s report says that in the next year smart phone use will jump up by nearly 50 percent with mobile phone users changing over from regular cell phones to more advanced smart phones. This translates to around 450 million smart phones being purchased, which is about 147 more than last year in 2010. Smart phone use is expected to keep on improving, but may taper off a little from the amount of growth usage saw in 2010.
The Android OS devices are expected to take over the market this year, especially since they are made by several manufacturers, and are predicted to garner nearly 40 percent of the market. IDC foresees that number to rise to about 45.4 percent by 2015.
While Android is doing well, Apple seems to be stuck at about 16 percent with its iOS devices, and is expected to decline somewhat to around 15.7 percent by 2015. Blackberry too is expected to lose customers and go from 14.9 percent this year to 13.7 percent by 2015.
Another operating system predicted to do more business is Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile, as Nokia shifts to those from previously using Symbian operating system. It is predicted to go from 5.5 percent of the market this year to nearly 21 percent of the market by 2015.
