Sony Xperia X10 due for update to Android 2.3 OS

After much debate in the past, some Sony Ericsson customers will get the Android 3.0 Gingerbread OS update for the Xperia X10 smartphone. The Xperia X10 is Sony’s flagship smartphone, and in the past the mobile company had said there would be no updates past the Android 2.1 Éclair for this model.

However, it appears that Sony has changed its mind, as they announced that sometime near the end of the second quarter or the beginning of the third quarter they will issue the update. The thing that is unclear is which customers will get the upgrade. Sony has announced that because of the available resources for the upgrade, they will put it out via trade versions of the new software. This means only some users will get the Android 2.3 OS.

The Android 2.3 Gingerbread won’t be released to each phone like it usually is, but instead will be done using PC-based upgrade clients. Another bad thing is that Sony has warned customers who get the upgrade that they will lose all of their personal settings and content if they don’t do a backup of all their data before the new software is installed. Plus, this will be the final upgrade issued for the Xperia X10 smartphone.

In addition, the smaller X10 Mini will not receive the upgrade.
