2012 sees the end of Sony Ericsson and the start of Sony as one of the leading smartphone maker. Two of the first smartphones to come from the company are the Xperia ion and Xperia S. These were both unveiled during CES 2012.
The Xperia ion will be exclusively available from AT&T and would be the first Xperia smartphone to be LTE capable. The Xperia S is formerly known as Nozomi. It is the global version of the Xperia ion but the two phones look different from each other.
The Xperia ion is larger than the Xperia S. It has a 4.6 inch HD Reality screen which the Xperia S comes with a 4.3 inch display. Both devices come with a Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon chipset that features a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB RAM and Adreno 220 GPU.
Both smartphones also come with a 12 megapixel Exmor R camera sensor that capable of 1080p video recording. They also have a 1.3 MP front-facing camera for cideo-call with 720p video support. They both have 16 GB of internal storage, run on Android Gingerbread and PlayStation certification. Sony said that both smartphones would be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich after the launch.
The Xperia S will be out this March while the Xperia ion will be released by AT&T in the second quarter of 2012. The Ice Cream Sandwich updates will be available in the second quarter of 2012 as well.
