Last week, Microsoft tipped its hand on the fundamentals of writing software for its brand new mobile operating system. It was confirmed that Silverlight and XNA will be the mode to building software that operates on the Windows Phone 7 series that are reportedly scheduled to start shipping sometime later during the year.

Even though the big MIS event of Microsoft has some more days to go, the Windows Phone 7 Series development platform is already well defined.

Microsoft wants all the WP7 devices to meet certain base-level specifications to ensure a smooth job for the developers.

The display revolution of Microsoft’s next-gen mobile phones have been reported as 480 x 800 (WVGA) pixels for the launch and the potential update will carry a native resolution of 320 x 480 (HVGA)

Scaling of images across all these pixels will be ensured with the help of dedicated hardware, without giving much of a load to the GPU

This, for instance, lets game developers write a lower resolution that needs less horsepower. This could be gradually scaled up when required while maintaining its compatibility to a range of screen resolutions.

Microsoft also revealed that writing XNA games for Windows mobile phones may need the upgraded version 4.0 of the XNA Game studio

For people playing along from their couches at home, this one is for you. The HD2 that is getting made over for a launch on T-Mobile in the United States also has WVGA and features a Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Qaulcomm is the WP7 silicon partner of Microsoft.
