You have seen me write about Google in the past and have commented how I think that Google will not ever really screw anything up, right? Well, today I see that Google will be testing a search engine for television. Apparently, Google will be teaming with Dish Network in an attempt to get internet content combined with regular television.
What’s the Search For?
Google plans to have their software in setup boxes provided by Dish Network and it will allow users to find satellite television shows, as well as, line up video from Youtube.com, a Google company. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google’s testing is very limited right now and the project can be cancelled at any time.
Don’t forget that Google is all about the advertising dollar and Google TV search would be able to target households based on what they are
searching for. In the end, Google will be banking on advertising, again.
There have been many attempts to get internet and television in bed together and with the hyper growth of technology these days, it will be hard for companies like Google to keep up. Televisions and setup box manufactures are on the move to create systems that marry the two technologies and that just creates a large pool of competition.
What About TiVo?
Remember that TiVo is still around, right? The company just recently announced plans to release a digital video recorder (DVR) that can record television, as well as, online content. TiVo just killed in a lawsuit against companies that stole their technology for DVR systems and seems to be back in the running after, what seemed like, years without any publicity.
What Do I Think?
Well, I am clearly a Google fan and I love to read more about how the company is stretching into more and more areas of technology. I have watched full television shows on Youtube, so being able to watch a show that I cannot find on the TV, sounds like a great idea.
