Here is yet another application for the droid based phone. Google has unveiled this wonderful application for all android phone users. Earlier, it had unveiled an application – Search by voice. Now, it is experimenting on writing based technology.
Gesture search aims at using gestures to search for specific details in your smart phone.
In many places, typing to search for something takes a longer amount of time. However, if one could just use gestures or signs, it is faster. Google has targeted this area of interest in its latest application. All you have to do is this, download the application, follow the instructions to install it in your smart phone and use it.
Every android based mobile phone comes equipped with an application called market. This application is built into the phone and can be used to download other applications primarily developed for the android. The gesture search application can be searched for and downloaded here. You can download the application or make use of another app – the bar code scanner and then download this app.
Gesture search allows you to search your phone by using letters; you draw letters on your display and it recognizes the letter, searches using the letter and gets you the result. Innovative technology. It identifies your contacts, bookmarks, apps and music – just a stroke with your stylus and voila! You get instant results…
When you run the application, you see a blank screen. All you need to do is draw characters/letters. Search results will show up as and when you begin to draw. Let us say, you are looking up a contact(your friend named Jack)..so you draw a J on the screen. It begins to search for all items containing the letter J, let alone your contacts. Every single thing on your phone – contacts, music tracks, applications; everything pops up to the right.
You can continue to refine your search by drawing more characters, one at a time though. I still am not sure if cursive writing is supported. From initial trials, it looks as though results are consistent and are pretty accurate. If your handwriting is illegible, say your ‘A’ is like the letter ‘H’, then the results would be based on both the letters. Once you get the results, you pick the result of your choice by tapping on it. Errors are prone to happen while drawing…just draw a line from right to left to strike out the most recently gestured letter whilst drawing a line from left to right erases the entire query.
This app is still an experiment. You can download it using the android market.
