EU Approves Google’s Acquisition of Motorola

The European Union’s regulatory body gave Google the go-signal to acquire Motorola Mobility, which is said to be worth around $12.5 billion. The European Commission said that it would monitor how Google and its rivals use the patents to make sure that the deal complies with EU’s antitrust rules. EU

Google said that it is happy with the approval made by the European Commission with regards to the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, which was first announced last August. This move would bring the deal closer to closing the deal. The company is just waiting for the decisions from other jurisdictions before the deal can be finalized.

Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility would supercharge the Android platform. It is not a secret that Google’s target is the company’s 17,000 patents and its 7.500 pending patent applications. EU looked into how Google’s ownership of the patents could affect the smartphone industry. Motorola’s patents could help Google in its legal battles regarding its Android mobile operating system. Google said that it would help defend its partners from lawsuits.

Google hasn’t made its own smartphone or tablet hardware and it could venture into the business through Motorola. European regulators approved the deal because Google made Android open to competitors. They expect it to continue but will monitor Google to make sure that it is kept that way.
