It is finally official, OnLive is set to launch June 17 of this year.  In case you aren’t already familiar with the concept of OnLive, it is supposed to be able to stream games (computer and console video games) to either your computer (PC or Mac) as well as your home television set.   This is completely on-demand with no installation required.

What this means is that you could stream games to your television set without even having to purchase a gaming console.  You could play a game for the PS3 on your home TV without having to purchase the PS3.  In terms of playing on your home computer, it isn’t required to have a lot of memory nor is a lot of free hard drive space required.  You just need to have a high-speed internet connection in order to enjoy the services of OnLive.

Now that you know what OnLive is, let’s get to the downfall of this June launch.  Yup, a downfall – when the service launches this June, we won’t be able to experience it on our home televisions.  The experience will be limited to Mac’s and PC’s.  This also means that you won’t be able to use it on your iPhone as OnLive had originally planned.  The television adapter is still in construction and the kinks haven’t all been worked out so they are unable to launch that part of the OnLive service until word comes out later this year.

That may not be so bad for some, but for those that were looking forward to using OnLive on their home TV’s, it stinks.  But, there’s more.  When OnLive launches, there will be a monthly fee of roughly $15 in order to use the service, and it’s not for unlimited use.  Moreover, at the moment, it’s a bit unclear of their purpose for this because it seems like you’ll have to purchase a game and possibly even pay an additional fee in order to rent the game.  Therefore, in other words, right now it appears that you’ll be paying the approximate $15 monthly fee for the OnLive service, then paying an additional fee to rent or buy the game.  After a little while of doing this, it’s going to end up being cheaper to have bought the console and the game.

I can’t say I’m very much interested just yet – I think they need to chance something up with the pricing, purchasing, and rental concepts.  However, if you are interested in the OnLive service, you can pre-register for it now at their website and get the first three months free as well as access (free) to game demos, community features as well as video profiles.
