OnLive has got solid company now. The coming out party of InstantAction is to be had at GDC.
A new browser based plug-in that lets complete games to be played on any web browser has been developed by IA. Of course, the browser has to be present on a machine that has the capability to handle the game.
To put it another way, a beast of a machine is still required to play games on the likes of Crysis. But the amazing fact that such games could be played on a web browser goes to unlock a new world of possibilities for independent developers and casual gamers.
Before the download starts, you will receive notifications and also whether your operating system or the machine is capable enough to handle it. If not, recommendations on what would make it capable are notified.
The games would be played back only a given OS supports them. The point is you can’t play a Windows only title within a browser on Linux or OS X.
InstantAction has chosen to highlight “chunking” rather than the usual streaming approach.
A certain fraction of the total file size of the game has to be downloaded onto the machine locally for you to begin the game.
The only title that has been currently announced for the platform as of now, is The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (a 2.5 GB game), though there was a demo of the Assassin’s Creed.
