When Bungie revealed to the gaming world that Halo Reach would be it’s last entry into the Halo universe, at E3 2009, they left many wondering what their next project could be. Could it be another Marathon game? Or possibly a sequel to Oni? Or would it be something completely different, that can explain why they left Microsoft in order to pursue different avenues with different projects?
Well, attackofthefanboy did some lookin’ around and found out something interesting that may possibly be going on in the underground lairs at Bungie. It seems as though Bungie has filed a trademark registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on March 9, 2010 for “Bungie Aerospace”. This trademark is believed to be used for developing proprietary software that Bungie will create and sell to developers and content creators to use their company-created game engine. Although, Bungie is more than likely working on some other game-related project that we have no idea about yet, this seems like some positive news for the Halo team. Creating their own first party game engine, much like Epic and the Unreal Engine, can work wonders for Bungie as they can now make money off of something that doesn’t have the name “Halo” in it.
Plus, if the future is to be considered, with some talk of who will make the next big budget Halo title, possibly rumored to be Gearbox Studios in conjunction with the 343 Industries Halo developmental team, Bungie can kill two birds with one stone. So what do you guys think? Will Bungies own game engine rival the Unreal Engine? And what do you think their next game-related project will be and will it use their own engine?
