Super-thin, lightweight laptops will be the stars of the Consumer Electronics Show in January. One of the show organizers said that at least 50 new models will be unveiled at the event. Intel CEO Paul Otellini is set to give a keynote speech at the show, where he’s expected to official launch the company’s Ivy Bridge processors. The chips would feature the Tri-Gate transistor technology that could decrease power consumption and at the same time improve performance. CES 2012

Intel showed its prototype Ivy Bridge Ultrabooks during its developer conference last September. Analysts are expecting to see more Ultrabook models at the CES 2012 that would have the new chips. Small and thin laptops have been around for years but it was only in recent years that they gained popularity. Apple’s MacBook Air contributed a lot for the success of the Ultrabooks.

Intel trademarked the term Ultrabook to pertain to any thin-design laptop that uses its processors and have certain specs. Its thickness should be not more than 0.71 inches at its thickest point. Its weight should be less than 3.1 pounds. The battery life must last up to five hours of general use. It should have flash-based drive for storage. Lastly, it must have Intel’s Rapid start technology for quick boot times.
