psp-go-reviewThe Sony PSP is the most advanced portable entertainment systems on the market with a great selection of games and movies, a great MP3 player, picture viewer and most recently support for the PS3.

Sony has expanded the offering of the PSP line with the PSP Go, a UMD-less version that is more compact, and one that Sony hopes will attract more casual gamers and people interested in movies, music etc.

DESIGN:

The PSP Go shares a lot of similarities with its bigger brother. However the package is cut in size a bit. The screen is 3.8 inches which is a tad smaller then the original system. Images appear to be a lot sharper on the PSP Go then the PSP 2000 and they also do not have the distortion that has plagued many PSP 3000 systems.

The battery is no longer removable which means the ability to carry a spare for longer trips is off the table as well as hacking since the battery has been a hackers delight. There is 16GB of on board flash memory and it can be expanded via Memory Stick Micro (M2) cards.

For those familiar with the original PSP systems you will notice that certain buttons have been moved around on the PSP Go. The volume button is not on top of the device as well as the brightness button. As for the Home button, that has been moved to the left side of the device and the rest of controls minus the WLN switch are on the slide out portion.

The controls are a bit cramped and thanks to the placement of the joystick, it will take a little getting used to. We were happy with the Right and Left buttons as they are easier to use.

PERFORMANCE:

Performance wise, the PSP Go doesn’t differ much from the original. The one major drawback we have is with the lack of UMD. This requires all games to be downloaded via the PlayStation Network and downloading games can take a while as they are in the hundreds of megabytes.

Also, Sony will not offer free digital downloads for customers who have existing titles on UMD, which is a bummer. Other then that you can expect things to be right about the same in terms of game performance.

The battery life is good and we did notice that you’re able to get about a full days use with average gaming, music or video playback.

CONCLUSION:
We truly have mixed feelings about the PSP Go. While it is a nice system, it still lacks a UMD drive which is a bummer as downloading games is a pain. Also a non-swappable battery is not a plus and seeing that the premium is a full $50 over the original system, its unjustifiable when the system is lacking so much.

In the end it will depend on what the customer is willing to spend and what they want from a gaming system. Just be prepared to make some compromises.

  1. It’s great to see people freely expressing their opinion. Thanks for your insights.

  2. Half-Minute Hero is a PSP game that will not be disliked by most that lay their hands on it. It is much of an RPG game although it does go away from many rules that most of the others follow. This game, for one, does not spend the gamer’s time in going through cutscenes hat might take up almost half of the actual gaming time. This game is all about fats paced action and cut throat speed that does not give you enough time to doze off. It is surely one of the best in its class. On the PSP, this 8 bit game is well made to remind you of the bygone days when 8 bit games were popular. The game, nonetheless, looks beautiful in spite of the seemingly low resolutions.
Here, you go about trying stop the evil hordes that are collecting again the inhabitants of the world. They had been defeated before by benevolent forces, however, they plan on their revenge again. With the wide array of heroes, this game gets quite exciting when you find the sarcastic remarks that they keep on throwing at you. Every line reeks of humor and sarcasm that only RPG gamers might be able to fully understand. Nonetheless, this game, apart from a few minor slumps, delivers what most gamers might have wanted. You have no time to waste, or muse about the unnecessary elements that so many other game throw at you. Simply enjoy such PSP video games.
