The latest user of the open source ANDROID after HTC – Motorola looks to unveil its latest smartphone “devour” later this quarter – speculated to be announced sometime late February – March this year. It makes use of the ANDROID operating system.
Motorola has added its latest feature – the MOTOBLUR in this smart phone. It will be the second smart phone from Motorola to feature this addition. Motoblur is a widget based system that combines various social networking websites – facebook, orkut, myspace and twitter providing an integrated interface for users. This means that users could make use of MOTOBLUR to log in to all their portals simultaneously alleviating the need to log in to these websites separately. One however needs to create an account with MOTOROLA to make use of this feature.
In addition to this widget based system, Devour is supposed to be equipped with a 3.1 inch touch screen display, full with a QWERTY keyboard (slider style).The integrated 3.0 megapixel camera provides video capture, image rendition capabilities to this smart phone. It is expected to be a typical Motorola product – weighing 6.3 ounces and is 2.4 x 4.55 x .61 inches dimension wise.
The focus is mainly on providing robust internet capabilities like e-mail support, photo sharing capability and ease of navigation. Integrated HTML support allows easy web browsing; it also is WiFi enabled, with e-mail support providing IMAP/POP server connectivity for gmail, hotmail and AOL. One more feature is – the user can download the mobile phone version of the suite of googleApps – the Google maps feature (with street view), Gtalk, gmail and Google calendar. The video capturing facility enables users to easily upload video clippings into Youtube. The spotlight clearly is to provide good internet based applications. It is also equipped to offer music rendition – a music player is built into the phone providing play/playback capability.
Apart from the software features and add-ons, devour is expected to run on a Qualcomm MSM7627 processor, with 512 megs of flash card memory. External card support is also expected – up to 16 megs of external memory support is to be offered along with this phone. Polyphonic tones, an inbuilt speech recognition engine and support for a host of applications built especially for the ANDROID are very useful additions.
The phone is to be distributed by Verizon wireless who will be providing cell phone services for this smart phone. Verizon however has not published the pricing details for this smart phone. It certainly does look like this phone provides a host of features, but the price is a major factor dominating purchase preferences.
