Recently I purchased the Kodak Easyshare Z950 because my Easyshare LS753 finally crashed and burned after 5+ years of excellent service. I read reviews ALL over the place that stated the picture can be a tad grainy, HD video capture not the best and the lack of view finder really bothered some. Since I currenlty own the camera and have been using for about 2 weeks, I wanted to review myself.
Kodak Easyshare Z950
When I first opened the box, I really liked the look of the camera. It lightweight, very easy to handle and the 3″ LCD screen is killer! Once thing that I did NOT like about my old camera was that it was sort of small and hard to handle when trying to take a videos. The first thing that I wanted to do was checkout all the options and see how well this 12.o MP camera held it’s own
with picture quality.
Once difference that I noticed is the fact that it takes excellent pictures in low light scenes. The adjustable ISO can be set to 1600 and really light the dark rooms up for quality pictures. Even without a flash I was able to take a stunning picture of the inside of my 90 gallon fish tank without the tank light on.
Options Galore
The options “knob” on the top is nice because you can flip to what settings you want quickly and the camera responds just as fast. From hitting the power button to the first simple shot is less than 5 seconds. That is nice for a point-and-shoot type digital camera. Next, I wanted to test out the HD video capture, since I like taking videos of my dogs, etc. The HD resolution is only 720p, but at least you have the option.
After about a week of taking, watching and editing videos in the HD format, I switched to the next highest resolution that wasn’t HD. That takes excellent videos in 640×480 resolution and they are easier to handle, store and edit, in my opinion.
10x Zoom!
The 10x zoom is insane and with the “continuous focus” feature, you can really get some stunning images and video from far away. One thing that I did NOT like about my old camera was that you couldn’t zoom once the video has already started. So having that option with the Easyshare Z950 is nice! You can see some examples on Youtube.
What Can I Say?
I love the camera so far. I think the images are amazing and I really hope to capture that one that I can blow up to poster size and retain the image quality. That is a positive of the 12MP camera. And the panoramic picture options are amazing as well and very easy to use! I have yet to find any cons for this digital camera and since I paid less than $200 for it, I really think it’s worth the cost for the average family photographer. I hope to get at least 5 years out of it.
