The Samsung HZ15W digital camera looks much better on paper than it really is. The main thing worth paying attention to is the 24mm-equivalent wide-angle lens with 10x zoom. This is an obvious advantage for a camera of this size that provides you with much shooting flexibility for the price of less than $280.
The camera also integrates a number of features that will enable your experiments with photography. But at the same time, the lens does not help you make the greatest pictures and it can take you a while to find the necessary features.
What is good about the camera is that it is very compact, indeed, and can fit into a small bag or even a jacket pocket. It looks very nice from the front too. On top you will find some standard controls like power button, shutter release with zoom ring, and a shooting mode dial. But on back it is a bit strange. To the top right of the 3-inch LCD is a rocker switch sitting in the thumb rest. The Command Lever is surprisingly open to some accidental presses that can occur while zooming the lens, for instance.
It also has a four-way directional pad for navigation and changing display information, setting a timer, entering macro and manual focus, or turning on the flash. At its center you will find a Menu/OK button for accessing basic shooting, sound, display, and system settings. At the bottom of the control panel is a Playback button as well as an Effects button.
What is a really positive thing about it is a miniHDMI jack on the left side of the camera besides Samsung’s charging/AV/USB jack on the right side.
As far as shooting modes are concerned, you have in your disposal a range from full auto to full manual. There is the SmartAuto that helps you select the relevant settings for 11 scene types automatically.
