Apple released a bombshell on the world when they premiered the IPad. To see now that the future of computing is going to be mobile and they want to make sure that they are in the lead when this revolution happens. More people still use a desktop computer, but slowly, the laptop is taking it’s place. Especially since laptop prices are so low now. Originally, you could only get one for over a thousand dollars. But like everything else in electronics, the more that they sold, the cheaper that they were able to make them. This was only the beginning of mobile computing. A few years ago, smart phones were able to be set at a price, that the normal person could have one. They started to replace the average cell phone because people saw that you could do more with them. A smart phone allowed you to have a mini computer in your pocket.

From the mobile phone known as the IPhone, the ideal of the IPad began. And from the remnants of the laptop, the netbook came to be. Both of these devices were made so that mobile computing could be done more comfortably than ever. With the IPhone, the screen was too small and it was not the ideal solution to watch long form movies. With the laptop, it was portable, but too bulky to be used by people who just wanted to use a computer quickly and easily. Now you have these two ultra portable devices going head to head. If you are not willing to spend money for both of them, which one should you get?

Apple’s main storyline for the IPad has been that it is perfect for absorbing media. You can just place it on a table or hold it out in front of you, and read a book or watch a movie. There are plenty of people out there that this is perfect for. There is no USB ports, so they want to make sure that you access all external media on some kind of network. Either through the Internet or through your Wifi. No USB only emphasizes that this computer was made for entertainment and not for you to work on. You would really need a USB plug for documents from work.

A netbook’s target market is people that still want to work on their computer but only light documents. If you are not going to run Photoshop or a 3D editor, then most work that you would need to do, can be done on a netbook. They are meant to miniaturize the computing experience, not revolutionize like the IPad is trying to do. If you still want the abilities of the computer but more power and comfort than a cell phone can provide, than a netbook is for you.

So to answer the question, should you get an IPad or netbook, the answer is, it depends. If you are someone that is looking to duplicate their normal computing but on a smaller platform, then get a netbook. If you are someone who uses mostly media software on their computer, and would like to read eBooks, then a IPad is the right device for you.
