Rumors say iPhone 5 Getting GSM/CDMA Chip

There are many rumors floating around out there that say the iPhone 5 will get the GSM/CDMA chip in order to give people more freedom in choosing their own phone carrier. Could that be true?

The iPhone seems to have an extraordinary way with making telecom problems become first page news. The GSM/CDMA chip would let phone users pick the carrier they desired.  This is supposedly why Apple picked Qualcomm instead of Infineon. Recently, there was a report that a hacker in Italy had discovered proof of a Qualcomm baseband chip inside the iTunes software.

About a year or so ago there was a debate regarding multi-mode chips that would support all sorts of networks and frequencies. Since that timeframe, Apple fans waiting for a Verizon iPhone had put their faith in such a chip’s existence. Again, recently, it appeared the Web was indeed considering the pros and cons of multi-mode chips, and that Apple and Verizon Wireless were going to make the Verizon iPhone have such a common chip.

The Verizon iPhone comes out February 10, but could it be possible a multi mode iPhone 5 like that above would be coming out just a few weeks later?  That doesn’t seem likely, but what about a dual-mode GSM/CDMA chip that can work with all the American carriers?  T-Mobile has said that they too want an iPhone, and probably weren’t getting one in the near future.
So, that possibly means that iPhone 5 won’t work with T-Mobile’s AWS 1700 MHz frequency for HSPA+ connectivity, or maybe it will work, but T- Mobile isn’t talking. Sprint has not said at all if they could sell the iPhone in the near future.

But, some Apple lovers believe that somehow their beloved company will manage to shake up the U.S. telecom business using a method Google hasn’t, but the truth is that iPhone is causing the exact opposite of that.  The iPhone appears to be the ultimate tool that phone carriers must get if they want to keep their customers.
This means if you are an Apple lover, you should want more than anything to get a 4G equipped iPhone 5. Why? Because no matter what the chip is inside of it, it won’t give you any more freedom.

If carriers believe having a segmented product will bring them business then their in for a long coffee break. Every carrier should get the GSM/CDMA Chip. More customers = more money. Im no telecom expert but I did take economics and there’s one heck of a barrier to getting into the business. What are carriers so worried about? Some cell phone bills are almost as high as monthly car payments. I mean, come on.
