The new operating system for the Apple Iphone will be focused more on multi-tasking. The leaked information that applications will be running in the background is only the beginning. The new “full-on solution” for multi-tasking will allow several third-party apps to run in the background. Because the software is not available yet, it is hard to say how this will effect how the Iphone will optimize user experience or save on battery life.
According to AppleInsider, the 3.0 software is already allowing multi-tasking BUT it does not allow multiple apps to run in the
background. In my opinion, running apps in the background will be a large stress on battery and possible take away speed at which the OS completes tasks.
Because there is no “windowing” user interface, it could become a problem switching between apps already running in the background. Now, a user can switch to a “secondary” app, but with 4.0 running more than 2 apps, switching between them will become a bit more of a process.
Just like a computer normally runs applications in the background and each one has a priority, it would make sense that 4.0 would be able to do the same so that resources aren’t being gobbled up by an app that isn’t being used at the current time, but is still running in the background.
It appears that Apple has a bit of work ahead if they want this operating system change to really be a benefit to users. The small issues like battery life are actually something that Apple should not forget to think about.
After all, what’s mobile about a phone that has to be plugged in all the time?
